More Alike Than Different
The Music Therapy Department of Georgia College along with Creative Expressions Studio will proudly host, More Alike Than Different, an art exhibit featuring Creative Expressions artists with disAbilities. The exhibit is part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month in a recent proclamation by President Barack Obama on October 3, 2011.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 2011 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. I urge all Americans to embrace the talents and skills that individuals with disabilities bring to our workplaces and communities and to promote the right to equal employment opportunity for all people.

The exhibition will be on display from October 12 to December 16, 2011. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm in the Music Therapy Department at Georgia College, located in the Health Sciences building on N. Wilkinson Street. The exhibit will showcase artwork created artists with disAbilities who strive to earn a living doing what they love… ART! The artists earn money from any artwork they sell and prices range from $3 - $75. On display are hand built ceramics created from local Lizella clay as well as a broad range of fine art media.
Casie Pace, recent Georgia College graduate and the show’s curator has been working with Creative Expressions artists since June 2011 and was excited to have the chance to showcase their work. Pace says, “This exhibit showcases each artist’s strength, interests and uniqueness. They all have a great passion for art-making and love sharing it with the world!”
Dr. Chesley Mercado, Chair of the Music Therapy Department, was happy to provide the CE artists with a chance to display their work. Mercado says, “This is such an exciting exhibition. The art is original and beautiful and is testimony that art can be a vocation for these talented artists”.
Katie Whipple, Creative Expressions Studio program coordinator, was also pleased to have the opportunity for the CE artists to show the Georgia College students, professors and staff as well as the broader community just how talented artists with disAbilities truly are. Whipple says, “This exhibit exemplifies our guiding principle: That we are more alike than different. We all want to use our talents and strengths to earn a living by doing what we enjoy. This exhibit provides our artists with disAbilities a chance to do just that”.
There will be an opening reception on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 from 5:30pm – 7:00pm in the Music Therapy Department located in the Health Sciences Building on N. Wilkinson St. Admission is free for this event and open to the public.
